. . . why not just paint?
Although paint alone is better than no treatment with preservatives,
paint films can easily be broken, will deteriorate and crack, allowing
moisture to penetrate. Decay organisms can follow and work undetected beneath the paint for some time. Therefore paint alone is not an
effective protection. It is imperative to use wood preservatives on all
wood which is to come into contact with dampness, whether it is to be
buried or not. Use it on all wood surfaces so that its chemical action
will destroy decay bacteria. It will also protect the wood from insects
by making it unpalatable or poisonous to them for years to come.
