. . . the primary consideration
First of all, a terrace is for use. What do you want from your terrace?
Is it to be an outdoor room where you will entertain, eat, sit, and
where the children can play in clement weather? What time of day will
you be using it most? If it is to be used mostly, or frequently, at night,
can it be lighted? If it is to be used a good deal for eating, how close
to the kitchen is it; or do you want to install cooking facilities beside
it?
If you have children, the terrace is a good play-place for them. It may
be that it should be placed adjacent to the part of the house where
the mother is most likely to be at work, so that she can supervise and
watch their play. Perhaps you can satisfy two requirements, that of
eating outdoors and that of supervised play, by placing the terrace adjacent to the kitchen, where food can be passed outdoors from a window
or from a convenient door to be served before it cools.
Should you wish to use the terrace for evening entertaining or for
sitting outdoors to watch television after the children and older members of the family have retired, the terrace is best placed away from the
sleeping rooms, so that the noise of conversation or entertainment and
the lighting of the terrace will not disturb the sleepers. Alongside a detached garage, or perhaps an attached one which extends away from the
sleeping rooms, would be a good location. This would give a chance for
plantings near the house, as well. Some people prefer to divorce the
terrace from the house and place it in a corner of the property, using
high fences to give it privacy; while others prefer to have the terrace
attached to the house so that there is an easy flow of living into and out
of the dwelling.
. . . terraces and the time of day
The weather and the sun must also be taken into consideration when
you are planning your location for the terrace. Remember that the
afternoon sun is hottest about three o'clock, and that a terrace on the
south-west or west of the house is likely to be unpleasantly hot during
the afternoon-even into the early evening if it is paved-and it retains
the heat unless it is very well shaded. Even if it is shaded, it is usually
hotter during those hours of the late afternoon.
